About Philadelphia Missionary Baptist

Church History

The Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church (“PMBC”) was organized on September 7, 1982. At the general business meeting, the Reverend Ricky McFarland, pastor of the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church of San Antonio, TX presided in the capacity of moderator and the late Reverend LeRoy Stone, a membership minister of the Golden Gate Missionary Baptist Church (“Golden Gate”) as witness to this marvelous event. The Reverend Forrest Alexander, Jr., also a membership minister of Golden Gate, whom left to organize was acknowledged as pastor, founder and organizer of PMBC.

The general body elected and accepted the name of the Church as the Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church of Kirby, Texas. Present were the Reverend Forrest Alexander, Jr., the late Reverend LeRoy Stone, Sister Brenda Alexander, Sister Barbara Alexander, and the late Sister Billye Jones and were the founders of PMBC. We rented the YMCA Building at 3211 Charles Conrad and met every Sunday except on alternate first Sundays (due to YMCA meetings).

In the spring of 1983 PMBC purchased its first asset, a piano and did not have a musician and in the fall Sister Zenobia Coleman joined the church and became our homegrown musician.

April 1984, Deacon Charles McClure, Sr., Sister Delores McClure, Sister Ruth Clark Lee, Sis Zenobia Joyce Coleman, and the late Sister Bettie Coleman were included as founders and organizers.

In July 1985, an agreement was reached with the owner of 3211 Charles Conrad to sell the YMCA building to PMBC for $75,000 and in early August 1985 it was published in the Herald News that the facility that PMBC was to purchase had been sold to the City of Kirby for $1. August 1985, the City of Kirby evicted PMBC from 3211 Charles Conrad but Mr. Joseph Hopkins, Principal of Kirby Elementary School (now Hopkins Elementary) and the Judson Independent School District allowed us to have Sunday morning Worship Services at the then Kirby Elementary School.

PMBC met at the school from 1985 until 1989 when we were blessed to rent 5251-2 Old Seguin Road where we remained until April 19, 1992. On this Resurrection Sunday we moved into the old Kirby State Bank building at 5250 Old Seguin Road which the members renovated into a sanctuary and fellowship hall.

July 10, 1994 PMBC held its Groundbreaking Ceremony for our new sanctuary and February 5, 1995 we marched into our new sanctuary. Pastor W.C. McIntyre and the Zion Hill Baptist Church were our guest. A march from the rented building to our newly renovated church was led by Pastor Alexander and included the Kirby Mayor and Kirby councilpersons, Camino Real Bank (now Comerica Bank) President and Vice Presidents, and TCC Construction owners and crew. In addition over 20 pastors and ministers and over 250 persons were in attendance. The existing church building (the old Kirby Bank building) was reconditioned into a fellowship hall and Sunday school rooms.

February 10, 2010 PMBC built a new Fellowship and Education Building after the demolition of the old Kirby Bank building.

The Lord has really blessed PMBC. A small hand few of people serving a big and powerful God. They shut the doors on Philadelphia at the YMVC and that was a blessing and we moved to the school. We had to leave the school because of District renovation and that was a blessing. We moved to 5251-2 Old Seguin Road and outgrew the 900 square foot rented facility and that was a blessing. Then we purchased 5250 Old Seguin (the old Kirby bank) and that was a blessing. Every time it seem like we were at a road block Elohim had another blessing.

Active Membership has grown from seven to 73. We are blessed and God is true to His Word:

Revelation 3:7-8 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
